Sentinel Event Alert: More Machines Triggering Alarm Fatigue
April 25, 2013- What started as a good idea for patient safety has become a risk to patient safety--the constant beeping of alarms and an overabundance of information transmitted by medical devices such as ventilators, blood pressure monitors and cardiac monitors. Nurses can become overwhelmed or desensitized, causing them to miss key changes in a patient’s condition. Now, The Joint Commission has issued a Sentinel Event Alert urging healthcare workers and their leaders to take a focused look at this issue known as alarm fatigue.Read more
