Fort Lauderdale: Venice of America

Fort Lauderdale used to be known as the spring break capital of the world. Today, instead of hordes of rowdy teenagers letting loose on the beach, you’re more likely to find a relaxing warm-weather destination graced with sugary white beaches, fine restaurants and trendy shopping areas.

Known as the “Venice of America” this city of islands is held together by an intricate web of Venetian-style canals and waterways. Needless to say, boating is a favorite pastime in Fort Lauderdale, whether it be zooming along the canals on a speedboat, cruising the coastline aboard a yacht or relaxing on a fishing charter. With 23 miles of shoreline hugging the Atlantic Ocean, Fort Lauderdale is fun even if you can’t afford a fancy boat. The beachfront offers clear views, typically across rows of colorful beach umbrellas, to the shimmering ocean and ships passing in and out of nearby Port Everglades.

Just a few miles up the coast, the charming village of Lauderdale by the Sea is home to one of the only living coral reefs in the country that is accessible from shore. You can snorkel or scuba dive right off the beach, and come face-to-face with a myriad of brilliantly colored fish, barracuda, turtles and sea plants.

Fort Lauderdale’s perennial sunshine, easy-going lifestyle and eye-catching landscape keep people flocking to its shores throughout the year, and many decide never to leave.
